Her progressive teaching methods earned national recognition, and the school where she worked, later named the Virginia Randolph Training School, became a model for vocational education. Throughout her life, she remained a tireless advocate for better school resources and opportunities for Black students. Today, in observance of Black History Month, we draw attention to Charles C. Dawson. Known for his contributions to the realms of art and design, particularly his influence on Black culture and the visual arts, Dawson (1930–2014) was a significant American painter and graphic designer. ⁠

Dawson was born in 1930 and raised in the segregated South, which had a significant impact on his outlook on life and creative style. He developed his painting and graphic design abilities while attending the Art Institute of Chicago. His art started to capture the rich cultural past and hardships of the African American society over time. Dawson celebrated African culture while using his art to address social issues including racism, segregation, and inequality, while also celebrating African American heritage and identity. ⁠

Dawson was a painter who frequently used vivid colors and strong compositions to produce dramatic depictions of African American culture in his paintings. He also produced important work for both commercial and artistic goals while working in the field of graphic design. Today, we recognize the outstanding achievements of Charles Thaddeus Russell, a pioneering architect who was among the first African Americans to break barriers in the field of architecture, and the first architect to ever be licensed in Richmond, Virginia. Born in 1873, Russell pursued his passion for design at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), becoming one of the first Black students to study architecture at the prestigious institution.⁠

Faced with systemic racial barriers in the United States, Russell persevered, applying his skills to shape the built environment, particularly in Washington, D.C. His work contributed to the architectural landscape of the city, designing structures that reflected both functionality and artistic vision. He designed homes and commercial buildings in what was called Postletown or "Apostle Town" (now known as Jackson Ward). His designs helped to transform the area into what was called the "Black Wall Street of America.⁠

Beyond his architectural accomplishments, Russell’s career symbolized resilience and excellence in a profession where opportunities for African Americans were severely limited. His legacy paved the way for future Black architects, demonstrating that talent and determination could overcome societal restrictions.⁠

Though details of his later life remain less documented, Russell’s impact on the architectural field remains an important chapter in the history of Black professionals in America. His achievements continue to inspire new generations to pursue careers in design and architecture.⁠

Today, we recognize the remarkable achievements of Bessie Coleman, the pioneering aviator who was the first woman of both African American and Native American descent. Born in Waxahachie, Texas, in 1892, her heritage reflects a rich blend of African and Native American roots, with her mother being of African descent and her father embodying both ancestries.⁠

Confronted with systemic discrimination in the United States, Coleman traveled to France to enroll in aviation school, where she sought to fulfill her dream of becoming a pilot. In 1921, she made history by becoming the first American woman to secure an international pilot's license.⁠
⁠
Upon her return to the United States, Coleman transitioned into a stunt pilot, captivating audiences with her skills. Furthermore, she dedicated her efforts to establishing a school aimed at training African American aviators, aspiring to create pathways to opportunities that were largely inaccessible at that time in the U.S.⁠
⁠
Tragically, Coleman lost her life in 1926 during a rehearsal for an aerial exhibition. Nevertheless, her groundbreaking contributions, unwavering determination, and impressive career continue to serve as a source of inspiration for future generations.⁠
